ICON – Lime Tree Square is built on the site of the original Clarks shoe factory in Street, a Victorian industrial market town. It is the first phase of a larger development, ICON, which comprises housing from apartment blocks to mews and terraced housing. Phase 1 ICON (Lime Tree Square) is part of the first phase of the 400-home ICON development in Street, a market town of 11,100 residents in Somerset. Phase 1 ICON (Lime Tree Square) offers 140 homes at the southern end of the site, which benefit from close links to the town centre. ICON Phase 1 (Lime Tree Square) contributes to the quality of life enjoyed by residents both within the scheme and the town in creating a sense of community. Taking an innovative approach to highways design, the development redefines the idea of the square and the street, to create a series of social spaces. It develops routes to other parts of the town using cycle paths and footpaths, to create new lines and links. In 2010 the project and, in particular, its public realm was recognised for its contribution to promoting integrated, innovative and sustainable design solutions with new residential schemes and was awarded the overall winner of the HDA 2010 Housing Design Awards.
