Pedestrian routes through business district improve gateway to town centre
Gillespies has competed the public realm for phase two of , forming a new gateway to the town centre.
A grand boulevard forms a pedestrianised route from the station through the new commercial development. The different levels of the site have been unified in a series of terraces, with a central green public space used for relaxation and social activity. Routes are strongly marked by avenues of trees and granite walls, with feature lighting used at night.
Adam Greatrix, associate partner at Gillespies, said: ‘The new landscape is elegant and contemporary, yet deliberately understated. The design response is respectful of place and seamlessly blends the more successful public realm traditions of the town in a modern style that will complement the new narrative of Stockport Exchange, and promote a step change in quality for this new quarter.’
The Stockport Exchange team included architect Aedas RHWL and landscape subcontractor CARA construction.
