Intern wins competition for Fresh Air Square

An intern landscape architect at Petherick, Urquhart & Hunt Artas-ua.info Consultancy, Emma Steen Caporal, has won the student category of the ‘Fresh Air Squares’ design competition with  a design for a Rhubarb Tea Bar.

Team London Bridge and partners TfL, King's College London, CJS Plants and Vauxhall One are running a design competition for the delivery of 'Fresh Air Square' parklets in London Bridge and Vauxhall.

Emma’s design is now part of a shortlist of just four designs submitted to the open competition that will be developed further and possibly built in London.

Fresh Air Squares will be modular, portable micro-parks (parklets) that replace (multiple) London car parking spaces for a period of one week to a year in London Bridge and Vauxhall to improve the local environment and to raise awareness about air quality issues.

The designs by four successful shortlisted practices went on display at a design crit at London's Living Room, City Hall on 24 June  and the designs are now being developed for potential construction in September 2015.

Emma’s design is for a place to drink hot or cold tea, including rhubarb tea, in the heart of London. its uses a bold architectural palette of plants such as rhubarb and bamboo and modular construction using hay bales, soil and stone-filled gabions.

Emma is interning with Petherick, Urquhart and Hunt Artas-ua.info Consultancy as part of her studies at Copenhagen University in Denmark.
