Grant Associates designs new man-made beach and watergardens

Land reclamation to create new waterfront park for Penang

Proposals have been announced for a new waterfront public park and retail destination in Penang, Malaysia, with UK and Singapore-based Grant Associates as lead landscape architect.

Gurney Wharf, as the area will be known, will be built on more than 50ha of reclaimed land running alongside Gurney Drive, and will include a 400m man-made beach for watersports.

The landscape masterplan – devised by Grant Associates in association with GDP Architects – comprises four main zones. In addition to the beach, the plan includes: tropical coastal water gardens with wetlands, filter ponds and boardwalks; a retail and restaurant hub with seafront terraces; and a forest grove with skate park and play areas.

The coastal water gardens will incorporate storm-water filtration systems similar to those used by Grant Associates at Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay

Reclamation work starts this month and, if approved, phase one of Gurney Wharf will be completed by mid 2018.

Keith French, director at Grant Associates, said: ‘Every aspect of the design concept for Gurney Wharf is about inspiring a sense of place, where people can fully benefit from Penang’s sea frontage. Based on the idea of a park-in-a-city, the aim is to create a destination in which communities can gather and enjoy a choice of four distinct areas, each with its own character. From tranquil water gardens and wetlands, to vibrant seaside restaurants, and a contemporary play areas and skate park, Gurney Wharf is an ambitious project that will create a new landmark for Penang.’
