The practices collaborated on an experiential new campus design

The award-winning collaborative proposal from Munro + Whitten and Urban Wilderness

LI-registered practices and  have picked up the public prize for their competition entry to design the new LX campus for the University of Lisbon in Portugal.

Members of the two practices took a broad view of the design challenges facing the campus and created a concept aimed at diversifying the experience of staff and students, while also integrating the university into the wider community.

By combining young designers and experienced practitioners, the approach asked the conceptual questions; experientially what would set the campus apart? How can we deliver and pay for the solutions presented and how do we manage new landscapes ensuring their success?

Core to the design philosophy was placing an equal weight on space provision for students and for residents. The design includes interconnected spaces that link the campus east and west to its neighbours. There is a car-free central area with new shade-giving planting, open plazas, new garden streets, lawns for events, new commercial developments such as hotels, offices and multi storey car parking to help secure finance, and, at its heart colour, water, planting, playfulness and life.
