CEC-led team completes major landscape project
Now open to the public, the new Bournemouth Pier Approach is an attractive addition to the town’s seafront.
Cornwall Environmental Consultants (CEC) was lead consultant and landscape architect for the scheme, working in a team with Hydrock, MeiLoci, Michael Grubb Studio, PBWC and Ustigate.
The team also collaborated with Bournemouth Borough Council, Mouchel and Willmott Dixon Construction, on a brief to design a world-class scheme to be a focus for the ongoing Bournemouth seafront regeneration.
The concept design, originally produced by Gillespies, was developed further and detailed by the CEC-led project team. According to CEC, it ‘relates back to the history of the town and the mouth of the Bourne Stream, which would have covered this area historically before it was developed’.
A water feature with various jets and displays traces the routes of the stream and creates the illusion of running water. Concrete islands provide seating and play features, and imitate boulders in a river bed. A bespoke lighting scheme enlivens the space at night and connects to the adjacent Lower Gardens.
Bespoke art elements are incorporated throughout the design, ‘based on ideas from local consultation and incorporating natural history of the area’. The planting scheme, for example, includes planting beds made from local Purbeck boulders.
Willmott Dixon Construction delivered the scheme , working with local and smaller contractors including Raymond Brown and Lazenby’s. The Bournemouth Parks Team implemented the planting and will continue to maintain it.
