The appointment will help ensure landscape research is represented and celebrated in the next REF exercise, which will conclude in 2021

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) has announced the first set of panel members for the next REF exercise in 2021.

Among them will be Maggie Roe AFLI, who joins the sub-panel for Architecture, Built Environment and Planning. One of only nine people on the sub-panel, Maggie’s is a key appointment to ensure landscape research is represented and celebrated.

In total, there are four main panels and 34 sub-panels. REF Received over 4,000 nominations during the nomination phase last year.

About the REF

The UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK’s system for assessing the quality of research in higher education institutions.

 Panel members will work to develop the detailed guidance and criteria for REF 2021.

Members include leading researchers and research users. Each panel also includes at least one member who will oversee and contribute to the assessment of interdisciplinary research.

A reader in landscape research and policy engagement at Newcastle University, Maggie joined the LI College of Fellows in March. She was a panel member in REF 2014, where she ‘realised the importance of landscape representation in this process’.

‘Although landscape academics provide a small part of the assessed work,’ Maggie said, ‘landscape is a dynamic research field. It is often underestimated because of the varied range of topics and output types.

‘As in professional practice, landscape researchers commonly work well in cross-disciplinary teams. They bring creativity to the research process, demonstrating an ability to see holistically and understanding the long-term impact and relevance of their work.

‘I look forward to being part of a rigorous and demanding process!’
